Art Therapy, Social Support Group
OVERVIEW & PURPOSE
The group aims to provide opportunities for the creation of Art through play, tuition, and encouragement. Mindful practices are used to help create a calm and supportive atmosphere. lt is a social group run by and for Artists who have lived experience of mental illness.
SESSION STRUCTURE
Group runs from 1pm -3pm on Wednesday. There is an optional WhatsApp group that members can join.
Welcome and Introduction for any new members.
The group initially aims to provide 12 weeks of taught elements on a modular rolling basis. That is Basic Drawing 1 (12w) followed by Acrylic Painting 1 (12w) followed by Drawing 2 (12w) and so on…
Mindful Breathing - occasional deep breathing exercises to help members get the right mindset for creating.
Check-in : a well-being round the room check in.
Task/Project Setting - assigning the study task.
Social group - if people need to move around then masks must be worn to keep in line with Co-Vid guidance.
Discuss possible future projects within group.
At 2.45pm end of Art Session. Members are asked to clear their area and put their Art materials in the box provided.
Facilitators clear and sanitise tables and chairs, and fold up tables and stack chairs. Ensure windows are closed when leaving Arts area.
OBJECTIVES
Provides opportunities for exploration of feelings, emotions using creative means.
Provide an opportunity to learn Art Techniques in a safe, non-judgemental setting.
Provide opportunities for social and personal development.
Provide opportunities to engage in external projects and art related activities.
To explore opportunities for income generation for MHiST with art based activities.
To explore mindfulness for well-being.
To have an Annual Art Exhibition, working with other organisations such as Bolton Art Circle or independently.
To be a supportive and social Art Group for members to share, learn and develop.
JOINT FACILITATION
This Art/Mindfulness group is led by at least one independent Artist with lived experience of mental health issues.
